Physical Therapy

Knee Physical Therapy Physical therapy is very important after knee surgery. We start with therapy immediately after surgery in the hospital. We often arrange for a therapist to see you in your home for a short time after your discharge from the hospital, but we encourage you to go to a physical therapist's facility when you are capable. In this facility, the therapists have all the equipment necessary to fully rehabilitate your knee.

CPM machine- for many years, I was a strong advocate of the CPM (continuous passive motion machine). I placed it on the patient in the recovery room, used it throughout the hospital stay and then sent the patient home with a unit. Several excellent and large studies showed the patients achieved better motion without the machine. Specifically, they achieved better extension (straightening) of the knee. We still use it occasionally for specific cases. If you have used one in the past, and would prefer to use it, let us know and we can arrange this.
